http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7832758/1/The-City-of-Light-Bulbs-with-the-Occasional-Ember

This is a fanfiction of the movie, City of Ember…

[She's holding the mysterious box, looking at the numbers in its l.e.d. count-down panel, while talking to Clary, and she starts crying] How am I ever gonna figure out what this is all about? It's all these zeros. That's what scares me the most. What would count down to nothing?”

The novel version

Ember The City of Bulbs
Prologue 1: Maiden Sparks

Lina Mayfleet and Doon
After Lina Mayfleet had left Ember with her sister and Doon, the city lived a new hope. The descendant of the 8th Mayor did not let her grandfather’s legacy to die out. It was believed that the builders had left a great secret which will save ember from its current state and also the scarce rule of the current mayor, Mayor Cole. He had been manipulating the citizens of Ember, making them believe that through harsh labour they could maintain the ill condition of the old wrecked machineries; sustaining the lights in the city. The citizens were also made to believe that the only way to survive was to work in the mayor’s evil clutch and there is no way out of Ember, they were doomed to believe that Ember is the only light of the world and surrounded by dark unknown mysterious world filled with nasty creatures. Fear may they be and then is when Lina Mayfleet planted a new hope, as she travelled out she found that Ember was actually an underground city and the upper world had a warmer eternal light which shifts every certain period of time with another – beautiful silvery lustrous orb mending the dark sky with it brilliant shimmer – and the next day rose a warm enveloping light orb which opens even the coldest buds of May. “What are these magnificent orbs of the sky?” wondered Lina. They could not believe their eyes, as Goon adventurously inspected the wide world they had discovered on top of Ember. There were lively plants which do not need special essence to grow in limited light world such as Ember, the plants are healthier and omit life energy that they have never seen.

Mayor Cole the protagonist

Lina then suggested to Goon that the people of Ember should know about this, and certainly Mayor Cole had tricks behind his sleeves. He had been getting supplies from the outer world which the people of Ember do not know of. He used the people to make him filthy rich as he manipulated the mind of his people that only by enslaving oneself to pipe-works – maintaining Ember’s rusty machine to support the city they could stay alive. Cruel and filled with false philosophy, Lina Mayfleet would only want to free these people from their cage of slavery and a deceiving life. So she and Goon decided to drop a message way up and up high over the city through a small pit of hole, hoping that Goon’s father would find the bottled clue which might be the only chance of escaping. Faithfully, the bottled message reached down to Ember and fell right on the street where Goon’s father was walking. He then picked up the bottle and was remarkably relieved knowing the fact that Lina and Goon were still alive – he thought they were killed by Cole’s guards upon their hunt of the so called traitors of Ember. As his eyes meticulously read while in his frowns dropped some serious nerve dews running down his cheeks, he could not believe what he had seen. As instructed by Goon, to not make a commotion out of it though he may still be in the state of shocked and disbelieve he must first make quick stealth, get himself safe before the eyes and ears of Ember bequeathed their master – the one maliciously evil Cole- who would go to the extent of killing innocent life just to keep their mouth sealed with the secret of Ember… Hence on the fate of the people now lies in the hands of an electrician – Goon’s father must figure out a way and also resolve on the questions he had when he was an inventor. The long lost wisdom of the ancient builders of Ember, to save all the citizens and diminish the mayor’s evil presence once and for all. He went to his workshop and started working on the keys needed to open the 9 secret gates to Ember…..

But before that !

Perhaps a little feedback on utilizing fanfiction as an advantage in ESL classroom. As already been informed, fanfiction is a website which youths especially would entertain because they are the closest group to current entertainment sources. These sources could vary from books, novels, comics, movies, and even real life icons such as singers, actors etc. What I believe would be extremely advantageous of using this website as a tool or medium for students to express themselves hence giving their thoughts acknowledgements from the teacher, friends and also other fanfiction viewers. This would not only engage them with authentic materials but also authentic audience and task when writing their own fanfiction or reading followed by commentaries of what they feel about other people's writings. When students are given recognition and feedback they are more prone to participating in the activity. This is exactly the tool for inculcating student centered learning and it also has the ideal stress level (almost zero stress in fact) because they are writing on the subjected material which they picked or chose. This will tremendously improve their esteem in writing using the English language as they feel like their works are being publicly recognized and published in other sources; enjoyed by other readers as well. In a nutshell, fanfiction is indeed a great tool in assisting English teachers to facilitate the students of English language whilst giving them the recognition they always want.

  1. Hello Asyraf,

Thanks so much for your fanfiction. Although I am not familiar with the story/movie, I appreciate how you put a lot of effort in telling this interesting story. After reading your fanfiction, now I am inclined to watch the actual movie--especially with Bill Murray in it.

Also, thanks for your thoughts in using fanfiction in the classroom. I am glad that you find there are a lot of benefits of using fanfiction in learning English.

    Happy holidays!
